The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has participated in a Pesticide Cooperative Agreement with the EPA since 1978. Cooperative enforcement agreements have been developed, under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act between the CRST and the EPA. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe EPD is authorized to conduct pesticide enforcement programs in the area of pesticide use, inspections, marketplace surveillance and certification maintenance. The CRST Pesticide Program involves sampling of ground water to determine the presence of pesticide contamination.
The CRST Environmental Protection Department works with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture to continue to cover necessary areas of cooperation involving Applicator Certification, Pesticide Enforcement and Prosecution of Tribal and state violators. The Cheyenne River Pesticide Program priorities include compliance with cancellations, planned Worker Protection Enforcement, aerial and ground application inspections, storage and disposal inspections, restricted use pesticide record audits, and applicator certification regarding use of general and restricted use pesticides.
